Pre-Conference Workshops on June 23rd at Weitz Center
Please note on your registration if you are going to attend either of these
free 3 hour workshops.
(Workshops are at different times and workshops are free when you register for the Conference)


- Population Education (1-4 pm)  offers teaching materials for K-12 including lesson plans, background readings for students and teachers, wall charts and our ever-popular video animation, World Population DVD and digital lessons worth $75.

OR
-Teaching with Primary Sources (9am-12pm) by Judy Bee of Illinois State Univ.   She is the Associate Director of the TPS Midwest Region which is funded by the Library of Congress.  This program contributes to the quality of education by helping teachers use the Library of Congress digitized primary sources to engage students, develop their critical thinking skills and construct knowledge. This workshop is for Elementary and Secondary teachers.

 Conference Sessions....on June 24th

Dr. Randy Bertolas will present the new Nebraska Atlas for 4th grade classes studying Nebraska History. Atlases will be given to all participants.   This is a new resource to help celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Nebraska's statehood.

Teaching Asian Studies in High School presented by Dr. Maorong Jiang  from Creighton University.

Nebraska Teacher of the Year, Mr. Tim Royers of Millard West will be presenting many of the new resources that the Smithsonian has started to offer teachers.   One offering is for teachers to make their own virtual museum collections to compliment their lessons.

Our Keynote Speaker is Judy Bee from Illinois State University.  She is Associate Director of the TPS Midwest Region funded by the Library of Congress.  Her specialty is using the Library of Congress' primary sources to research and critically analyze for historical events in our curriculum.

An Un-conference session of teachers talking to other teachers and sharing some of their best lessons in their favorite topics.  Bring your favorite lesson plan in any subject to share with others.

Deb Anderson presenting the many resources that National Geographic has to enhance any teacher's classroom.

Kelsey Arends, Kent Day, & Julie Smith--Nebraskans for Civic Reform is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization working to create a more modern and robust democracy for all Nebraskans. Experiential learning, service learning, and civic engagement can reinforce any and all concepts delivered in social studies classes. Specifically, Nebraska State Social Studies Standard 12.1.2 requires engaging in meaningful civic participation in community issues, our area of expertise!

Economics for Elementary Teachers,"It is where the money is!!"  With Jamie Wagner, from UNO.
This session is for the elementary grades where money sense should begin. During this session we will show teachers how to use Children’s literature to teach economics in their elementary classrooms. All participants will receive a free copy of the curriculum guide “Teaching Economics Using Children’s Literature.”

Beth Kabes and Nebraska's branded HippoCampus website will be reviewed, a free, core academic website that delivers videos, animations and simulations for high school social studies teachers and their students. Participants will be shown how to log in with an account, create playlists, and search for content correlated to the Nebraska Standards.

Becky Walters,who is the Sister School Coordinator for Opportunity Education, an Omaha based non-profit foundation that works to break the cycle of poverty through education in Africa and India. This organization gives teachers the opportunity to establish a pen pal relationship with the worldwide schools they support.

Sarah Elger, from Aurora,  “Cardboard = Smartphone=Virtual Reality"
Using free phone apps and cardboard "glasses" teachers can take their students on virtual reality field trips. Let us show you how we took our students on tours of the Eiffel Tower, Yosemite National Park, and New York City without stepping outside the classroom. Google Expeditions is the newest way to engage students globally.

Our 2015 Conference was on  Friday, June 26th.  It was at the Weitz Center,  at UNO.   Fun was had by all.

All three of these workshops will provide stipends for participants and included will be the $35 registration for the NSCSS Conference on June 26th. 

ON June 26th....the Keynote will start at 8:30 to 9:15 then sessions 1 and 2 will be held in rooms 201 and 209.
Lunch is at 11:20.   Sessions 3 and 4 will run from noon to 1:35.    At 1:40 the last meeting will be to evaluate the Conference and vote on changes of the Constitution and have a raffle. 


2015 Keynote speaker was Jasmine Farrier, Ph.D, Political Science, at the University of Louisville
